Emmett hadn’t counted on people being so surprised when he actually showed up. Was he really so terrible? He always tried to show up to functions like this, even if it was just for Rosalie. Besides – Alice would never forgive him if he skipped out on one of her little projects, anyway. Alice seemed amused at him, for some reason. Maybe she already knew that he was thinking of mocking Bella? Well, of course she had to know. Anybody could have placed a bet on that, even without her psychic powers. He grinned at Bella when she greeted him.
“Hey, Bella. You look nice.” He said, sounding almost sincere about it. He really did like Bella – she provided him with most of his amusement, these days – but he just couldn’t help the urge to make fun of her. She made it so easy, just by being her clumsy self. “Try not to fall down in those shoes.” Emmett didn’t particularly know much when it came to women’s footwear, but … Bella had trouble staying on her feet even in the most sensible and practical of footwear. He noticed how tense Bella seemed, without Edward there. Really, she had to learn to relax a little. Jasper would have come in handy right about now ….
“Don’t worry, he’ll be here.” Emmett said, in an offhand way. He had no idea whether or not Edward was planning on coming, but he better damn well be after Bella had gotten dressed up for him. He turned out to be right, though. Edward showed up just a moment after he’d spoken, and he was relieved that he hadn’t been way off-base. He nodded when Edward greeted him. “Edward.” He didn’t bother to tease Edward about being late and the reasons behind it. There’d be plenty of time for that later. He then turned his attention to Rosalie. She was why he’d showed up, after all. Even an overeager Alice couldn’t have convinced him to come, not on her own. Emmett smiled at Rosalie.
“You didn’t think I’d turn up? You really didn’t think I’d miss seeing you dressed up, now, did you?” He asked. “You look great.” Great? The understatement of the century, but Emmett really didn’t want to dig around in his mind for another word right now. Emmett wouldn’t have left her to suffer through it by herself, anyway. He knew that she was going to have a hard time being civil to Bella, and he’d have to try to make sure that things didn’t get too heated. Maybe if he managed to occupy Rosalie, she would forget her hard feelings toward Bella for the evening? He didn’t think so, but a guy could hope, right? He laughed when she said a party wouldn’t be a party without him. Well, wasn’t that sweet of her? He knew he brought a certain something to the party, but he didn’t think most of the humans thought of it as liveliness. Hell, most of them were afraid of him.
He was missing the game tonight to come to this dance, but he hoped it would be worth it. Alice hadn’t really threatened him – too much. It was true that she’d been quite persuasive, but in the end it was still his decision whether or not he showed. And here he was. Hallelujah. Emmett glanced at Esme when Rosalie spoke to her. He hadn’t expected his ‘mother’ to be there, not without Carlisle. Oh, well. She had to have her fun, too, sometimes. Hopefully Carlisle would be along later, anyway. Emmett laughed when Esme said then they’d be able to ‘teach them a thing or two’.
“Teach us? You think so?” Emmett laughed. Even though Esme and Carlisle weren’t so much older than he was, he still thought of them as his parents. And who liked to think that his parents could teach him a thing or two? Oh, well. He was relieved that Rosalie, at least, wasn’t being overly hostile toward Bella. At least not openly, anyway.
“So, why were you late, anyway, bro?” Emmett asked, as if it might actually be his business. He needed to know if he was going to work in a good jab or two about it. Emmett noticed Carlisle come in. There, now the family was complete and the mayhem -- or rather, masquerade -- could begin.

Emse smiled at her children. They made her feel so young. She looked around the room one last time finally catching Carlisle's eye. "Now if you will excuse me, my date has arrived." Esme said as she picked up the front of her dress.
She walked gracefully towards her husband. He was the only person she saw at the moment and the only one she wanted to be with right now. She couldn't hold back the smile she held as she got closer and closer to him.
As she reached him she gave him a quick kiss and wrapped her arms around his waist. "Hello, my love, I thought you would never make it." She teased him. It was definitely the atmosphere that made her feel and act this way. "Would you like to join our children, or would you rather dance?"

Carlisle smiled at his wife, it seemed that ever time he saw her, she grew more beautiful. Though he knew that there was no chance of them growing older, or even growing at all. It was not often that he attended balls, and it made a nice change for him, and to see his family there as well. Though the place was dark, and mysterious he could make out a few faces and hear what was being said.
He watched closely, as Esme walked towards him. Her grace and the way she looked too his breath away, and at that moment he knew just how in love with her, he actually was. It seemed like nothing else mattered in the world to him. How ever his family was still in his mind, Esme was the only one there. He returned her smile and tilted his head to the left slightly, as he looked at her.
Carlisle grinned at her, as he felt her lips touch him. He casually draped his arms across her shoulders, as he brought his head back to centre. "Hello, have I ever told you how beautiful you are?" He said, "For a while so did I. But I couldn't disappoint Alice. Sorry for my late arrival, Charlie is still dealing with the accident scene." He explained. The atmosphere was a great one, and it was something that should be enjoyed by everyone.
He smiled softly at Esme, before contemplating his answer for a moment. "I think I had, better say hello to the children, for a moment, and apologise for my late arrival. However after that, may I have the next dance with you?" He asked her, as his eyes shone with happiness. He offered her, his arm as he stood by her. "Shall we?" He asked, as he stood tall and looked in the direction his wife had just walked.

Esme smiled at him and nodded as he explained the situation with the accident. She didn't like that life was so fragile for humans. But what Carlisle did was valiant. He braved his temptation to feed to save their lives. He was the poster boy for control over his urges. "I hope that everything turns out well. Bella is hoping that Charlie will be tied up for the night. She isn't technically supposed to be out."
Esme took his arm softly and lifted her dress with the other to make walking easier. She knew that she didn't need the help, but it was something she had grown accustomed to. "Always the gentle man." She replied softly. "I would love to have the next dance. It seems the students could use a lesson in proper ballroom dancing. Their skills seem a bit lacking." She smiled at him as they made their way across the floor.

Carlisle was still surprised at how humans treated their lives. They could be taken away at the flip of a switch, and then was it all gone, over like it had never really begun. Though sometimes, a life time ago now, all he had wanted was nothing more than that, to stop his life. Just to die, and be gone from the world. However all that had changed, he had Esme, and the children to think about. Carlisle knew that before anything else in the world they came first. No matter what happened protecting his family was the only thing he would do, to see that they were all safe and well. Now that family included Bella.
Carlisle nodded, "They are in capable hands, Im sure they will be fine, but if any complications arise, I may have to depart." He told her, saddened by that thought. He sighed as Esme spoke about Bella. "I think Charlie has his work cut out for him, though I shall give fair warning to her and Edward if he arrives, though I'm sure we all will. However lets not worry over the technical things tonight." He said, with a smile. He did not like to deceive Charlie, especially after the night they had just had. But then he had deceived people most of his life, so what was one more? or another bend in the line of truth.
He nodded to her words, "I would not have it be any other way with you" He told her softly, it was true Carlisle would always be the gentleman around Esme, and really any woman, though mostly Esme. "Well I am sure we could give them a lesson in ballroom dancing. After all our skills have had the time to be perfected some what" He said as he smiled gently to her. "It seems that I shall be dancing with the most beautiful woman here." He said to her, as he looked over at the children.

Esme nodded. "I would hate it if you had to leave my side tonight. Would it be selfish to not let you go?" Esme smiled softly at him. She loved this man so much that it killed her to be away from him. Maybe one day she would show up at the hospital to suprise him. "I am sure Edward could get her out of here and home if he does arrive. It is my understanding that her bedroom was staged to make her look asleep."
Esme smiled. She knew that had she the ability to, she would be blushing. He was the man of her dreams and he made her feel whole. "You flatter me, Dr. Cullen." She said with a smile. She loved to tease him, although it wasn't something that many people saw. She was just in a playful mood at the moment.

Carlisle smiled at Esme, "I would hate to leave also, but I must go to where I am needed." He said to her, Carlisle would feel like a part of his heart had been ripped out, if that had to happen, but he could never tell. If the hospital needed him, then he would have to go no matter how much he did not want to. He was happy to help others, as long as he could always go home to his family. That was more important than it all. "No it would not be selfish of you, as I have not seen much of anyone, of late. Though I would ask for your indulgence with the matter." He said, as he spoke softly to her, hoping that she would understand.
He nodded before grinning, "What it is to be young and foolish" He said, as he looked between the faces of the ladies and gentlemen there. They all looked handsome and beautiful, from what he could tell. "I think Charlie is smarter than that, though the scene I think will have him busy for the night. Or at least the early hours." He explained, as pictures of the car accident came into his mind. Humans were sometimes so foolish, and careless. He wondered how they were not injured or hurt a lot sooner.
He smiled at her again, "Dr Cullen ... why thank you ma'am. After all it is what I am here for. And I speak nothing but the truth." He said cheerfully, Carlisle guessed the mood of the room, had ever one acting slightly differently, though he was hardly bothered by it. "The hall looks great, Alice and her friends have done a good job. It seems to me like, it could be a fun night." He remarked, as he took another look around the dark hall. As he stopped a couple of paces from the family, and smiled at them all. "Hello" he said, as his eyes darted between them all. He nodded to them, "Alice, Rosalie, Edward, Emmet, Bella."

Elle Greenwood felt more than a little self-conscious as she walked into the masquerade ball. She had no idea what had possessed her to come in the first place, yet here she was. The first thing she caught sight of was Alice Cullen, and she felt even more out-of-place. She'd only seen the Cullens on her visits to Forks, and she'd always been more than a little jealous of the beautiful Cullen girls and their too-hot-to-be-real boyfriends. Some people just had all the luck, but Elle supposed she really couldn't complain. She wasn't hideous to look at, and she knew that -- she just couldn't compare to the Cullen women. She caught sight of Bella Swan, who she'd seen several times on the Rez. She waved at the only other human in the room, a big smile on her face as she all but pranced over. It wasn't as if she actually knew Bella well -- it was just that she knew Bella better than anybody else in the room. And they all looked so intimidating, especially that one huge guy. What was his name again? Merritt? Merrick? Emmerson? No, Emmett, that was it.
Elle fidgeted, adjusting her mask, hoping that she at least looked presentable enough not to have made a fool out of herself by coming. Elle was a girl who took great pride in her appearance -- though she'd only been that way for the last year. She'd dressed up to come, even if her dress wasn't anything spectacular or over the top. At least she'd made an effort, right? That had to count for something. She smiled at Bella as she finally made her way over to join the others. One had to wonder if she could possible be more nervous than she was. Maybe knowing that she was surrounded by vampires would have done it, but Elle wasn't privy to that knowledge. She was pretty fearless, anyway, which begged the question of just why she was so nervous. She didn't even know, herself. Maybe her subconscious was reacting to the vampires in ways that she wasn't even aware of.
"Hey, Bella." Elle knew better than to call the Swan girl Isabella. I mean, everybody knew that, right. She nodded toward the collectivity of the Cullens, not trusting herself to remember all the names correctly. "Where is everybody? I thought this was supposed to be a party!" Elle joked, not realizing how seriously a certain Miss Alice Cullen took her parties.

I was a fool for no one,, but ohh i'm a fool for you. You caught me under false pretences How long before you let me go? __________________________________
[/b] Rosalie still wasn’t used to being around Bella. She wasn’t found of her at all, not like allot of the rest of the family. Rose hated her for one reason, something that meant allot to Rose though she wasn’t going to let it –it being Bella. Ruin the night for her, she couldn’t do that to rest of the family. She knew everyone would be waiting for her to have an out burst of emotion at Bella like she normally did. Charlie? Really well if he finished up early maybe he’d be taking Bella home with him. If he came to see what was happening here, if Rosalie was in luck which she very much doubted she would be, but if she was Charlie would turn make a scene about Bella being with Edward and then take the human home. Great. Finished. Then no doubt she’d be even more grounded that she already was. "I’d dress up for you any time Emmett…" she joked, saying it quietly though all the family no doubt still heard what she said. Well everyone apart from Bella hopefully. She was going to try and be nice to Bella tonight, she didn’t wa to ruin it for everyone. So civility was the key tonight. It would only be a couple of hours with her to be new family member, sister she guessed she’d be when she became a vampire. She already had a sister though so why did she need another? Maybe she wouldn’t want to be anywhere near the coven when she became a vampire, maybe she’d escape an just leave as soon as she could. "you don't half look good yourself, where’d you get the tux from?" Alice had probably left it for him or something, but she hadn't seen him in it before. Well she wasn't disappointed at all. Well the whole family was here now, so it wouldn’t that bad, she could keep herself away from Bella for as long as possible. Well Jasper wasn’t here but no doubt he’d turn up later when he could. He’d obviously have something serious to deal with if he wasn’t here, as he’d never let Alice down not like this, it wasn’t in his personality to do that. Well even Esme and Carlisle were worried about Charlie turning up here, why'd Bella always have to do this. She always made it so hard for the family to get on as normal. She was human yeah, Rose could maybe... nearly live with that. But all the things that had happened since she had became part of the coven. Ouch, a human that was part of vampire coven not good. Or something Rose would ever want to happen but you couldn't win with everything could you? She giggled at Emmett reaction to Esme saying she could teach the kids a thing or two about dancing. Typical of him to react that way, Esme and Carlisle were practically there parents and well no one liked being told they weren't as good at something as there parents were. "Esme please... don't kid yourself, you know we're better at dancing" she joked. Great her eyes darted to the doors as she heard someone approach. Jasper? please, please, please be Jasper. Was the only thoughts that were running through her head. She wanted it so much to be jasper. But no, a line she'd used before, here comes the humans. Popped into her head. Though she knew Bella which was good. At least she maybe able to keep Bella away from Rose hopefully, though that would mean she wouldn't have to talk to her, which was good. Which was brilliant in fact. She sighed in frustration, and realization that tonight was going to be harder than what she had originally thought it would. [/blockquote][/size]
