The day was clear, but a few little parts of rain here and there. At times, drops of rain splattered onto his windshield, but it was nothing that bothered him much. The rain was something he liked, it also meant that he could work, and go outside, without the fear of being seen. The car wheels tore through the left over puddles from the rain that never really seemed to disappear, until he reached the hospital. The hospital had always been his second home and was the place where he did what he loved the most. He was a doctor, and that's what he liked to be.
The doors of the hospital flew open in front of him as he briskly walked through them. The patients were waiting there, some for appointments, some for emergencies. The nice lady at the counter had greeted him with a smile, as always and he greeted back with a friendly wave along with a smile. He was not on the floor today, he was only a back up but yet he still felt the need to be there. The receptionist handed him a clipboard of paperwork that needed filled in, he had left it yesterday and today looked bleak on the doctor side of things. He held the paper in his cold hand, it would take him less than ten minutes to finish it up, but then he was free for the rest of the day depending how busy it became.
He walked into the office, in his familiar white lab jacket, blue shirt and black pants. He took a breath as his eyes gazed around. It was the usual hospital office, nothing that stood out and everything had a purpose there. Everything had its place, and apart from reading material, and a few photos of family he had that were on his desk. Things were minimal. He made his way around the desk, and took his place behind it, placing the paperwork down, his concentration was on the paper in front of him, though his office door was open, so he could see the goings on outside. A feeling told him it was going to be a slow day today, however he hoped that there would be something for him to do soon.

It was a typical week day for Edward, after staying with Bella for the night, he made his way home to change and grab his car so he could go to school. A nearly redundant routine that he’d been repeating ever since he was trusted enough to be around the humans for long periods of time without having Carlisle or anyone worry that he might just snap and kill a bunch of innocent students. It hadn’t have been so necessary until the family started growing. It wasn’t that he minded it, well Edward didn’t mind the material even if he hadn’t really changed that much since 1943. What bothered Edward were the humans for the most part, he’d stayed away from them almost as much as what Jasper did, managing to keep himself free of lab partners in classes as well. A talent for intimidating people he liked to think.
Now it wasn’t so bad, he had Bella to make going to high school repeatedly worth while. Though he did still get tired of it and feel the need to miss a class here and there. It wasn’t like his grades could slip, he’d done med school twice and read every book he could get his hands on. Today was one of those days that he just wanted to be somewhere else, but wasn’t going to completely skip, he had a Spanish test second period and then a study before lunch. A nearly perfect schedule in his books. After he’d written the test, which hadn’t given him much of a problem he decided on heading out of the school for a couple of hours, debating on where he’d end up as he walked to the Volvo. Edward figured he’d stop by the hospital and see if Carlisle was busy today, though he hoped the ER wasn’t full of overly bleeding humans.
Getting in his car it didn’t take Edward long to reach the familiar hospital, at the speed in which he drove everywhere being late was never an issue. Edward knew the location of Carlisle’s office, and could tell where he was without any problems, but acting human was necessary so he’d ask the receptionist just to make it look good. ”My father in his office?” Edward asked giving his words a friendly teenager sound. ‘As far as I know.’ the lady replied. Edward gave her a smile and headed down the hallway in which Carlisle’s office was located. He was on top of his hunting so the smell didn’t bother him, and well it was nothing compared to how Bella smelt to him. Coming to Carlisle’s office, seeing the door open he gave a little knock anyway, “Working hard? Or hardly working?” he asked walking into the office more.

Why was the work so tedious today, he wondered as he sat there and signed forms, prescriptions and looked over charts. All things that he usually did, but today it all seemed to drag. Even though he had his dream job, and well a good place to work in. Everything seemed so trivial, and un interesting. For some strange reason, Carlisle was just waiting for something to happen. He was nearly itching for it, not that he would ever wish something bad on another human being, but it would give him something to do. He finished up the paperwork, that he usually did at home, in the night, as it gave him something to do. Not that there wasnt anything at home to do, there was plenty to satisfy him. However everyone was out doing their own thing, or with each other. So he usually retreated to the comfort of his office, to read, listen to music, or just think.
As he sat there, he stole quick glances out of the door to see an ER floor that was quiet. What was it today, national be careful day or something. There were a few cuts and scrapes that arrived, a bad case of food poisoning, and that was about the sum total. Story of his life, when there was no one around Carlisle just happened to be in the mood to do a lot of work. When there was a sudden influx of people, that would be the day when chaos struck, and the whole hospital was thrown into a bad state of turmoil. That would only be solved if people kept themselves together long enough to think. Letting out a sigh, he smiled a little, well at least there were not accidents, and no one was hurt. That he could be thankful for, something which he liked to see, no matter how bored he was, or how slow things became.
Hearing the knock at the door, and the familiar voice Carlisle looked up. Edward, thank the lord. He thought as a beaming smile crossed his face. "Hardly working" He replied, with a slight laugh as he motioned for him to come in and sit down. Then the thought of school came into his head. "What happened to school today?" He asked him still smiling, "Is it not challenging enough for you this year?" He joked a little, knowing that it had to be the same old same old stuff, year in year out. Something which would dive Carlisle stir mad, but he was luck that he looked old enough to be a doctor.

Edward knew that high school was just something that he would never escape, his appearing age dooming him to keep repeating the same three grades every time they moved. Of course he got lucky every now and again and he could attend a university or something. It wasn’t like that challenged Edward that much more but it offered him many different choices. It also gave him many different career choices, of course those career choices went to waist with Edward, but he’d come to terms with that a great many years ago. He’d just continue to collect diplomas from every place they lived. He had started out faithfully attending every class each day, minus those sunny ones in which he wasn’t permitted to leave the house where humans could see him. But that had lost it’s appeal when the material kept being repeated over the years, but he’d been doing better with the attending classes over the last couple of years.
Walking through the hospital, taking the quicker root through the ER Edward couldn’t help but notice that the place was quieter then it usually was. Well quieter in the sense that there wasn’t many people around, Edward was rarely blessed with a quiet atmosphere always having someone else in he head. It was odd he thought, figuring humans got themselves in trouble that needed medical attention daily he wondered what was different about today. He knew usually Carlisle would be quite busy with people coming in and out of the ER, even for the little things. It didn’t take him that long to reach Carlisle’s office basically knowing the root off by heart, even if trips to the hospital weren’t something he did often, he’d visited a few times.
Edward laughed at Carlisle’s thoughts when he realized who his visitor was, and let a smile rest on his lips when the older vampire confirmed Edward’s suspicions. “I thought so, its unnaturally quiet around here.” Edward said as he walked the full distance into the office and took a seat opposite Carlisle, relaxing a bit. “Finished my test early and my next class isn’t until after lunch. I do plan to go back at some point” Edward answered. He laughed at the following question, he wasn’t sure when school had stopped being challenging. “Nothing stimulating so far, but I can always have hope that they’ll present something new.” Edward said, of course he knew better then to actually hope for that. He was a bit envious that Carlisle looked old enough to pull off anything that he really wanted to.

Carlisle often thought of what it would be like to relive school over and over. He could no even begin to imagine what it was like, the life he had given Edward, seemed at times to be no life at all. Carlisle could never say he regretted what he had chosen to do, as it gave him a friend for life, someone he would give everything for. However the life that Edward was living, had to be a tough one. The fact Carlisle, he could pick and chose what job he wanted, what he wanted to do, and he could stay around longer with his age. There never was the same old thing, his days changed with ever passing hour or minute. His mind was always challenged somewhat, even in small ways, there was nothing that was the same really.
The peace, it drove him a little bit crazy. Now he knew plenty of the staff there, who were relived to have five minutes, or in the case of today, longer to themselves. It was a welcome change to all the usual action and shuffling around. Though since Carlisle needed no refreshments, or sleep. Sitting waiting for something was time wasting, and he already did enough of that on a night. The waiting was the worst, waiting for some unwitting human to have an accident, or do something really stupid. Something that was totally avoidable if the thought was put into it. A really shame that life for them was so fragile, and could be broken so easily. That he was thankful his family did not have to deal with, it was something that an accident would no bother a vampire so much.
As he heard Edward laugh, he remembered his gift. Mind reading, wow that was great sometimes, and others really annoying. But today, he didn't mind he was overjoyed to see him. "Yes it is, so where do you think the action will be, no way that Forks can be so.... safe" e said, as the smiled was still on his face. As he listened he nodded, "So how did the test go? And I'm glad to hear you are going back." He replied, the last part was a slight lie. Carlisle was bored out of his mind, and the company was welcomed with open arms. However school came first, or at least that was what Carlisle had said to them, most of the time. "Hmm, something new in the curriculum. Its almost unheard of. But we could donate a large sum of money to the school, for a computer lab or new science labs. As them to change some things?" He suggested with a grin.
Sure they had the money to do it. It was then that Carlisle realised just how tough it was to do the same courses over and over. As a wave of guilt washed over him, he forced it back. "You are ok to be here today?" He asked, knowing to the outside it would seem like an innocent enough question, but the blood around the hospital was a great test of restraint. "Whats is you next class?" He asked him curiously.

Edward, yes grew tired of repeating the high school routine more then he use to but there was no ounce of regret in him for what Carlisle had done for him. He probably would have simple just died a couple days after that of his parents, but he really had no regrets about this life he was given. Sure there were cons but the pros outweighed the cons by a lot for Edward. “I don’t regret it.” Edward said as casually as if they’d been carrying on an actual conversation instead of Edward hearing Carlisle’s thoughts, a habit it couldn’t break with his family members. The retentiveness of playing a teenager seemed to have died out a bit since his meeting Bella, nothing was boring or uninteresting when he was around her, it was being forced to be having to be away from her that got to him. He hated that.
Edward could see how this sort of day at a hospital would bother someone like Carlisle. The lounging around from them to do nothing was left for the night time when they could stay at the house and be themselves. Being forced to do it while working would seem unsatisfying. Humans would find this a good use of their time, even if their time was more limited then his or Carlisle’s, they just didn’t seem to grasp that so easily. That was one thing he could say about school, there was always something he was being made to do, even if a class could lose his interest he could find a way to amuse himself at times. It never seemed to be boring like this seemed to be, especially when you could innocently probe the minds of those around you. Of course nothing he found out would leave his mind, that would truly be invading their privacy more then he could help.
Mind reading was almost as annoying for Edward as it was for others, depending on the situation he was in. What he hated was being talked about by people who had no idea he could hear them, or when someone had his name, that was difficult to distinguish at times. “Hard to say, there could always be a car accident or the popular hiking accident.” Edward said, he wasn’t sure how humans could smash their cars like they did, they rarely went over the speed limit unlike him and the rest of the family members and well they always made it safely, mind you they were all vampires. “Rather well, it was Spanish.” Edward said with a smile. He knew Carlisle was as glad Edward was going back as much as what Edward was, though he could always change his mind depending on how he felt when it neared class time. “That might not be a bad idea, we could definitely use some new stuff that’s for sure. It all seems like its left over from the seventies in some classrooms.” Edward said with a smile, speaking from actual experience in that area, he’d been a junior in high school then as well.
There was an odd time in which they would cover slightly different material or do something that he hasn’t seen in a decade or something, but usually it was pretty similar, just different text books and teaching methods. Hearing Carlisle’s question, he nodded, “Yeah, I went out last night as a precaution.” Edward said reassuring him, Edward took no chances with letting his eyes get to dark he wouldn’t put Bella at risk like that. Though he could smell the blood it wasn’t as alluring or sweet smelling as hers, but Edward changed topics of thoughts in his mind quite quickly not wanting to have to change the answer to that question because he let his mind wander. “English, which isn’t so bad, we’re touching on more of the classics this term” Edward said with a slight smile, he enjoyed reading obviously and the classics as well. Though he’d read them when they weren’t so classic at one point.

Carlisle opened his mouth to say something, but quickly shut it again. It was easy to forget that Edward could hear his thoughts, a gift that was not an easy one to have, but then was there anyone gift that was easy to handle. Carlisle smiled a little, as Edward spoke, "I'm glad to hear that. But I am sorry" He said as he glanced at Edward for a moment, and then back to the room around them. Carlisle could not know if he had been selfish in turning Edward, even though his mother had asked, for Carlisle to save him. He guessed that there was a lot happening, though he was pleased with Edward, in fact better than pleased. He was happy it seemed now, since he had found Bella. Carlisle had a lot to say thanks to Bella for.
Carlisle could easily go crazy today, he was even thinking about taking off early if things did not pick up. Something which he normally would not think of doing. He would stay as long as there were patients, however today there seemed to be little going on, and he could maybe be of some use elsewhere. Not that he knew what he would be doing then, he would possibly go hunting, so just hiking somewhere. Lounging was not something he enjoyed doing so often, sure when with the family it was great, as the conversation was always good. He could surprise the hospital at night, as he had to put on a sleepy voice or waste time in getting to an accident, to make an effort to appear human. But sitting waiting, was literally driving him nuts. But unless he jumped out in front of some unsuspecting driver or just happened to cause an accident himself, then that was how things were going to stay, as he would never risk some else's life unless it was something serious.
Carlisle found it difficult not to be a little happy at the prospect. Sure strange and possible sadistic, to others but they were not sitting waiting of something to happen. "Yes true. That sounds about right for Forks. Though how many accidents can there be in the one day? If there is one, then its possible it may start an epidemic." He said lightly, truly hoping not, but then it would be a good use of his time. Not that he wanted harm to come to anyone, as it was a terrible waste of human life when tragedy struck. "Hmm Spanish, so that makes, how many languages do you know now?" He enquired with a grin. The perks of immortality, had to be the learning that they could do. Or that was how Carlisle saw it. Carlisle laughed as Edward spoke, "Ok I shall see what i can come up with for you." He said, with a grin, "The seventies, now that decade was a good one." He commented.
Carlisle did not like checking up on when they had last hunted, but the one place a sudden urge for blood, would be noticed, was the hospital. And he was sure that he could not pass it off as anything else. So hearing that he had already gone was a small relief. "Good to hear. Sorry about asking, I should have guessed you would not let anything slip." He said kindly with a smile. It was plain for Carlisle to see how he felt about Bella, and it was great to see Edward happy. "Ah the classics, that were not so classic in our life time too. I have to say, Jane Austin is a favourite. Do you know the classics you will be reading this term?" he asked him, as Carlisle's eyes wondered out of the door for a quick moment, checking things were ok, there was still nothing happening apart from a nurse reading a magazine. "How is Bella these days?" he asked as he grinned more than smiled, as his eyes came to rest on Edward.

Edward smiled seeing that Carlisle was about to say something and then he remembered. It was nice to see that some people could forget about his gift, Edward sure couldn’t. At times he thought that turning it on and off would be nice, but he didn’t want to know what it was like without being able to read minds. Edward shook his head slightly, “Don’t be, had you not done it I wouldn’t have experienced much of the things that I have or met those most important to me” Edward told him. He didn’t regret the immortality, not at all, did he think that he was a monster? In a sense he did but he was getting better with that thought and not allowing himself to think it so much. He gave a smile towards Carlisle when he heard that he was happy for Edward, he knew that his single status had caused a bit of worry throughout the family for a while.
Edward wasn’t sure what it would be like to be in Carlisle’s position right now, actually he would like to experience even for just one day but there were many reasons as to why he couldn’t. For one, the most obvious, his appearing age wouldn’t ever allow him to get use out of his medical degrees but then again it wouldn’t allow him to do much of anything other then high school. But the most important reasoning was next to Carlisle, his longest friend, father, and mentor, Edward’s restraint against human blood was pathetic. Not something to be upset with, anyone compared to Carlisle in that sense was pathetic, and it wasn’t something to be ashamed of. Edward still would like to attempt it, maybe his next role could be child protégé, though that was a laughable thought. Right now he just hoped for another stab at university, it would be a nice switch. His eyes having strayed from Carlisle for the moment over to something on the wall they returned back to the older vampire when he heard the thoughts which caused him to smile and let out a small but silent laugh. He couldn’t picture Carlisle doing any of that.
Edward thought about that, he could see where it would be in a sense fun for lack of a better word to create a small accident to bring business to the hospital. But like Carlisle he was sure many wouldn’t agree with that. “With Forks, it’s hard to tell. Hmm, an epidemic could be possible, that could be too much though” Edward said, a thoughtful tone to his voice. But he had to agree, human life could be too easily wasted and it was not a pleasant thing to think about. Edward laughed at Carlisle’s question, “A possible ten give or take I believe. I may have to add more if I get bored.” Edward said with a lingering smile. He had retained so much knowledge over the last century, spending most of his nights spent reading books or with music so as not to drive himself insane with boredom when the night wouldn’t end. “Thank you, I’m sure the rest of student population would be grateful as well.” Edward said. “Yes, I remember it well. The clothing was amusing.” he said with a laugh.
Edward hadn’t really thought about what making a split second decision to come to the hospital could mean. Luckily keeping Bella alive was his top priority when they were together so his eyes rarely darkened, but he didn’t blame Carlisle for checking in. “Its fine, understandable. I hadn’t given it much thought myself really until now.” Edward admit, which he should have since this was not the place to forget when your last hunt was. “It is odd to see them as classics when I recall buying a few when they first came out.” Edward said with a laugh, “Well I know what we’ll be studying this term, but nothing has actually been said. We’ll be looking at Poe, Twain, Dickins, and oddly enough Bram Stoker.” Edward said, though wasn’t really looking forward to reading Dracula so he was hoping for another book. When Carlisle actually spoke Bella’s name Edward was sure you could seethe fact that he was extremely happy reflect in his eyes, “She’s doing quite well for the most part. Her friendship with Jacob Black is quite strained, though I am partly to blame for that. It's not an easy thing for her to deal with.” Edward told Carlisle shifting in spot in the chair, he’d like to smooth this over with Jacob but it didn’t seem possible. "I am trying though" Edward said, not quite sure how truthful that maybe.

Carlisle really had no idea how tough it must be to hear what everyone thought. Something which he was sure he could not handle. It was all to easy sometimes to not think about it, because how many people could hear others thoughts, let alone vampires. It was not an every day thing, and he should pay more attention to what he was thinking about, when he was around Edward, though usually it was nothing that was worth bothering about. Carlisle smiled back at him, and shrugged, "Good point, but then had I not, you would not have others thoughts buzzing around your head, or have the blood part of this to deal with. But I am certainly glad I did." He told him honestly. There was not one person he was more proud of than Edward, for everything that he had accomplished, and done in his life. It had puzzled Carlisle for a long time as to why Edward had not found someone, but Bella seemed like a great girl, and Edward seemed happy, so how could Carlisle not be happy for him.
There really was not much use for Carlisle to dwell on the lack of anything at the hospital. He was a little happy that no human was seriously injured, at least not yet, so that was a good thing right? Age was a draw back for them, a real down side to the life. They could only stay in one place for so many years, if they were lucky they could add a few here and there, but it was not too often it happened. Carlisle was pleased, very pleased with what Edward had done. Edward was like the son, he could not have. His best friend that stayed with him, and someone who he could talk to about anything. It was a combination that others might dream of, and as Carlisle saw it, there was no down side to it. Carlisle had more years on his aversion to human blood. Far more time to become, slightly immune to it. Edward was doing great thought, there were a few mistakes, but then everyone had them, and really Carlisle was proud of him for doing so well with it. It was not the easiest of tasks that he had asked for.
Putting another humans life at risk un-necessarily was something he wanted to avoid. So he guessed that jumping out in front of that unsuspecting driver was far from a good idea. Nope he would just have to wait, it was Forks after all. Something was bound to happen. "Yes, but still the less busy it is, the safer people are. Maybe bagel guy will come back in today." He thought aloud. Human and clumsy went together like a hand and glove, unavoidable ignorance or just idleness to take more care. Either way it kept Carlisle in a job, so he was not complaining. "Oh, only ten give or take." He said grinning, as if it was no feat at all. "Thats great, so if we go on holiday anywhere, we can call you in as a translator." He said, Carlisle could not say about a holiday but it was always handy to know a few languages, or in Edwards case a lot. "Not a problem, I shall see what I can do." He replied, really it was the least he could do, to mix things a little. After all living through school constantly was not something he would want. "Maybe Alice can bring some of it back into fashion. I still have a few clothes from that decade." He commented as he laughed also.
Carlisle did not want any mistakes, he was please to see Edward that would never change, but there was the danger of blood at close quarters. So for Carlisle it was a must, for him to check and see. He nodded as Edward spoke, "Its not that I do not trust you, I trust you more than anyone" He told him honestly. Carlisle trusted Edward more than anyone else, as he had known him longer, and knew he reasonably well. "I just thought i would check. You can never be too careful around here." He said with a grin. At one point Carlisle was sure that the town itself was jinxed, but that was an technical improbability. "True, though it is amazing how things get better with age." He said, as he listened to the authors that they might be studying. "I wonder what Bram Stoker was picturing when he wrote Dracula? It is certainly nothing like us." He replied with a grin, sure there was the blood part, but they had chosen another path.
"That is good to hear, she is a nice girl. I cant see why you are partly to blame?" He asked curiously, sure there was the fact they were vampires, and the La Push pack were now in full swing. Though he was sure he was missing something. Maybe it was not his place to pry in Edwards private life, but he could not help himself with the question. "I know you are, just dont try too hard. Things dont need to be pushed or a false sense of happiness felt." He said, hoping that Edward knew what he meant, and did not take offence to what he said.

Edward to say the least was more then overwhelmed the moment that the pain ceased after Carlisle started the transformation. His mind had never been quite unless he went to great lengths to separate himself from everyone for some time to think to himself. Though now the silence was uncanny, he’d learned to adjust to them and controlled his urge to comment on thoughts. It took a bit of time for him to figure out which were thoughts and which were words. Of course no matter how use to the idea of hearing people’s thoughts, there were just some things that you should not have to hear. Those were times he wished everyone knew about his ability then they’d guard much of their thoughts when he was around. He looked back to Carlisle when he spoke, he gave a light shrug at what he said, “Those are two small prices to pay for everything I’ve gained. Me too, thank you” Edward said. His stare lowered slightly, hearing Carlisle’s proud thoughts, he had never thought of himself to be someone to be proud of. But he was glad to hear that Carlisle was happy for him that he’d found Bella after so many solitary years.
Sure Edward often wondered what it would be like to hold a job, he’d never really tried a part-time job as a student though either. Then again when he thought about it, it was probably for the best. For the longest while Edward was not what you would label a ‘people person’, he’d tended to shy away from humans. Not sure if it was because he didn’t like them or because he didn’t want to slip but or a combination. Though it seemed like a more luxurious position in the human façade then high school but Edward wasn’t all for dwelling on the what ifs of life or in his case his existence. There was just too much time that has gone by to really reflect and analyse your every move so he didn’t. Edward considered himself to have experienced a little bit of luck at the time he met Carlisle, the older vampire was much more to him then his creator, most importantly he was the father he’d long forgotten. He couldn’t ask for a better friend either. Thinking about it, Edward was one of those apart of the vampire life that wouldn’t trade anything.
Edward had despicable moments where he’d taken a few human lives, but he’d been quite careful no to let that happen since. Innocent people had never been a target of his, his ability had made sure of that, the guilt though was still difficult to handle. “That is true. The bagel guy?” Edward said. He for one knew probably the one human with the worst bad luck when it came to being clumsy or a danger magnet, and he wasn’t sure how Bella hadn’t been seriously injured before she met him. It was a mystery that was for sure though he may worry more then anyone else about her safety he tried not to let it show so much. Edward laughed and smiled at Carlisle’s comment, “There wasn’t much else for me to do for the greater part of a century” he grinned. “I’d be glad to lend my services out.” He said, Edward was basically a retainer of knowledge, which was probably why he was finding school more redundant the longer he went through it. “Perfect” Edward figured new stuff in the school would make it better even if they probably wouldn’t be in Forks much longer, though he may be attached to the place or one tiny part. “I’m sure as soon as the word fashion is mentioned she’d be on board. Really? You should bring them out of hiding at some point.” he said with a chuckle.
Edward had no issues with Carlisle checking in on his hunting pattern, seeing as this was probably the hardest place for a vampire to be but Edward was doing quite well with ignoring the natural instincts lately. Edward smiled at Carlisle when he spoke, “I know, thanks” he said, Edward still didn’t completely trust himself with his control though he wasn’t sure if he ever would, doing so would keep hi guard up so he figured that would be his best be. “Completely understandable, I would hate to do something stupid.” Edward said with a smile, this would be the worst place Edward could think of to lose control over yourself and he would hate to mess this up for the family. “Mm, books are just one on the list, I never get tired of re-reading them” Edward said, which was true, reading was a large part of his life and he wasn’t particularly picky either. He laughed at Carlisle’s comment, “I haven’t the slightest idea, but Hollywood had created an even bigger mess of us.” he said shaking his head slightly.
Edward smiled at Carlisle’s comment about Bella, though it faded slightly at his question. But that wasn’t because he didn’t want to answer the question, he told Carlisle everything. Carlisle and Alice were his confidants. Besides, completely sealing off his private life didn’t seem fair when he couldn’t help but pry “Well foremost he hates me, not that it bother’s me any we’re not suppose to get along.” Edward said with a little shrug, “But he hasn’t forgiven me for ah well leaving, not that I deserve forgiveness. But while I was away, he sort of grew to love her.” Edward said running his hand through his already messy hair recalling the lowest time in his existent was not an easy thing for him to do, he’d prefer to just forget about it. He nodded as Carlisle spoke, “I won’t. Besides I don’t think that he’ll budge any since I’m not willing to give up him what he wants. I just want Bella’s happiness” Edward said.

Carlisle smiled at his words, "Nothing to thank me for. I just hope that you don't, well you forgive me for the pain I caused you" He said, Carlisle had gone through it, and it was bad, it was worse than bad, almost like being burned alive from the inside. But where Edward was concerned it was all worth it from his point of view. Edward was one of those rare people that you were truly privileged to meet. He was a gentleman of high standard, and was an all round great person. Bella was an extremely lucky girl to have caught Edwards attention. She really was. Carlisle couldn't tell who was luckiest, Bella for finding such a great guy, or Edward for finally finding the right girl and by all accounts a great girl as well. Which ever way it was, they were great together and as long as Edward was happy, then Carlisle didn't mind it at all.
Humans were a problem for them, being around them was tempting, and temptation was not a good thing, when it came to a matter of blood. And well beating hearts that appealed so to the family. It was difficult to be around humans with their clumsy ways, and as soon as blood was spilt it could just be the game over time. Edward was the son Carlisle could never have, someone who mean a lot to him, an d no matter what happened nothing would or could ever change that. The life was always tough, but it was all they had and it was their own identity. Like humans, they had their groups and vampires had their own. All be that close to one of the largest covens in their case, but still it was a group and one that care about everyone else that was there.
Carlisle laughed as he nodded, "Yes the bagel guy. He come by here two three time a week, with a sliced hand." He started to explain, half the staff there found it comical that he was always there, he even had his favourite room there as well. Strange he knew that, but you found it hard not to like the guy. "He always slices the bagel into his hand, as he doesn't defrost them first. So he is never too far away." He said, grinning a little at the thought of him. He always seemed genuinely happy to be there, which was another strange thing, but they were living in Forks. "I am starting to see that now" he replied as he grinned. "Happy to put them to some use. After all Alice has her fashion talents, Emmett and Rose, well I'm seriously glad I cannot hear their thoughts. Jasper has Alice and fashion to deal with, Esme and decorating, me and this place. So I think a holiday, and another language might be a good thing." He said, shuddering slightly at the thought of fashions, and decorating.
"Dont tempt fate, I might just do that. We could find you something from that decade as well if you wanted? Halloween party or something like that. Turning up as ourselves might turn a few heads." He joked, knowing that the family was always turning someone's head for some reason. "Alice, she is dangerous with fashion. In fact I really wouldn't want to be on the continent when fashion is mentioned. I might even pretend the word never existed" He said laughing again, thinking of the torture of shopping trips that he had been the unfortunate victim of. Carlisle nodded as not to be rude, he didn't like thinking about hunting and everyone else's hunting trips, but he really didn't want any accidents that would lead to worse conditions. "I trust you, I know you wont!" he said as he smiled.
"I should hope not. There are only so many books in this world." Carlisle could sit and read all day if he had the chance, but then the occasional medical books, or something in his study would catch his attention. He nodded as Edward mentioned Hollywood. "Yes they have, they are always the bad guys. Never good, I guess we have others prejudice and assumptions to thanks for that. However blood ad gore sells, money is everything these days." he said, as he sighed at the thought. "Edward you did what you thought was right, we stood by your decision and at that particular time, there was a lot going on." He said trying to make Edward feel even the slightest bit better about what had happened. Though Carlisle found it hard to totally forgive him for wanting to die, and not saying anything about it. That hurt more than the time he had gone out on his own. But Carlisle had forgiven him totally, it was hard for him not to do that. "I can see that." he said with another smile. "But what ever happens Edward, the family is here. Just dont go off again, and remember the boundary. Bella knows what she wants, regardless of Jacob love for her. If Bella loves or loved Jacob in the same way as she does you. Then she would have told you." Carlisle was trying his best to be understanding, but he had never been in the situation Edward was in. "Just give things time, a lot has to settle down. But I think things will come around in the end." He said positively, Carlisle did not know, and if things didn't go the way Edward wanted, Carlisle didn't know what was going to happen.

Edward nodded, the pain was a distant memory, though one that he’d always have but it didn’t matter, it was worth it he figured, “I already have, many years ago in fact” Edward said though he couldn’t deny that it had been a pleasant thing to go through, three days of lying there while the venom made it’s way to his heart to make it stop permanently. But he couldn’t imagine another life other then this, not sure if that was because his human life was very faint, nearly non-existent in some areas, it didn’t matter. It always shocked, in a sense, Edward how highly that Carlisle thought of him, Edward didn’t even think of himself like that. A soft smile rested on his lips as he heard Carlisle’s thoughts, they were always so genuine in Edward’s opinion. “I am” Edward said clarify Carlisle’s silent wonderings, though he had a feeling if he were to put that question to Bella she’d disagree with Edward but really it was just a matter of opinion.
Edward had always seemed to have problem with humans, not just because their blood was freely moving through their veins but a few other things that they did. It was a difficult task, being close to humans for six hours a day at school but Edward had come up with his own way of avoiding too close contact; he wasn’t exactly friendly towards them. Though with Bella now he was friendlier, but still not overly and only really mingled with then when he was with Bella. He took his precautions though; he wouldn’t be the case why the family had to move. Edward knew the relationship he held with Carlisle was one you’d probably never see anywhere else and he wouldn’t trade it for anything, Carlisle meant too much to him to do that. Though the family was all really close, well maybe not him and Rosalie but that was getting better, at least neither of them hated one another they just didn’t get along tat well. But Edward wouldn’t give up any of his family members.
One of Edward’s eyebrows lifted up a bit as Carlisle explained the bagel guy, “That’s a lot of visits in one week” Edward said with a smile, Bella didn’t eve appear to be that clumsy though he prevented as much trauma to her as he could. “You would think that human’s would learn from their mistakes instead of reliving them” he said as Carlisle explained further about the predicaments with the poor bagel guy. But humans were different then vampires, they didn’t appear to grasp things as easily as he or Carlisle, Edward wasn’t one for making the same mistake twice he was a quick learner. He smiled at Carlisle as he spoke, listening to him talk about the family, “Yes, you’re quite lucky that you don’t have to hear them” Edward comment about hearing Rosalie and Emmett’s thoughts, Rosalie’s never being pleasant towards him. “A holiday, getting away from everything, would probably do us all some good.” he said laughing when he saw Carlisle shudder a little.
He laughed, “I sure we could. A Halloween party, now that could be interesting. I’m sure we’d stop them in shock. Though if you mention party to Alice I’m sure we will end up hosing it.” He said with a smile, Alice and partying seemed to go hand in hand when she could manage it, it was nearly as bad as shopping with her. “I know what you mean, that one time was my first and last shopping trip with Alice.” he said shaking his head slightly, it had been an experience that Edward wasn’t willing to relive. Not to mention he didn’t need to come home with any more clothing that he didn’t need but Alice always found a reason why he needed. Edward didn’t believe that it would be a difficult thing to ignore now, human blood, not when he was faced with the smell of Bella’s daily but he could always be wrong about that and chances weren’t something to be taken. He nodded and gave a smile of thanks when Carlisle said that he trusted him to be here at the moment.
“There are, and most of them are worth while reading” Edward said, of course there were books out there that he had decided against reading but that didn’t mean others didn’t like them. He had a habit over the years of divulging into Carlisle’s medical book collection. “Hmm, I guess they’ll do whatever it is to make money. Though it’s probably best the humans see us like that.” Edward said knowing if Hollywood made them appear like they were in reality they’d have a problem living among humans. Edward dropped his head slightly, this was still a touchy subject for him, though he doubted it would ever be easy to talk about. “A stupid decision” Edward said moving his eyes to look up at Carlisle though dropped them when he heard Carlisle’s thoughts about him and his little stunt in Volterra. “I am sorry about that” Edward said concerning that thought. When he spoke again, Edward looked back up at him listening, doing his best not to give a bad reaction to the mention of Jacob. Though his attempts failed when Carlisle mentioned Bella loving Jacob, which caused him to flinch slightly and shift uncomfortably though he knew Carlisle was right, Bella would have told him. At least he figured she would have. “I know, your right.” He said first, “I won’t cross it, I promise and I won’t leave again” he assured him. Edward pursed his lips slightly, “He knows, the whole pack knows what Bella wants from me. Jacob’s already said he’d prevent it as best he could. And he’s said going through with it would allow them to break the truce. He’s looking for a fight.” Edward told Carlisle, though he hoped that things would work out like he said it would, but Edward wouldn’t stand in the way of happiness for Bella. But he wouldn’t, couldn’t stay and watch her be happy with someone else if she chose that root.

Carlisle hated the pain, it was something that he couldn't forget. Some days it was in the front of his mind, the feeling of being bitten so many times, and then just left. Discarded like nothing at all. He had put Edward through the same thing, the same pain. Carlisle smiled at those words. "Thank you Edward, it means more than you know. However I am sorry" he said, there was nothing that he could change to have done it differently. Even if he had only bitten him once, it would have taken longer, and the fact that he had caused such pain to another was difficult to deal with. Carlisle grinned as he realised Edward was listening in. "I guess so. You both seem to have been made for each other" he told Edward. It never ceased to amaze him how strong the bond was between them. Well between any of them, they all now had loved ones and people who they would do anything for. It was almost like the family was complete in a strange way.
Carlisle didn't have a problem with moving around a lot. It was just something that happened. And it wasn't like they hadn't had to do it before. The bodies that the family had accumulated had caused more house moving than them actually staying for too long in one place. It was just something that happened, an unavoidable thing, that really wasn't all that good, but it gave them a reason to start over. Have a new life, or sort of. New schools, new people that sort of thing. Above all a new house for Esme to set her self to work on. He wasn't sure that the paint on the walls, actually stayed the same for more than a year. If he was lucky, though she didn't often go too crazy, well she called it trying to keep appearances up. In fact it was more of a habit to decorate really more than was necessary. Edward was the first person that Carlisle could freely talk to, and well that meant a lot. What ever Edwards decision Carlisle would stand by it, the family was the most important thing. To keep them all safe and out of harm was all he asked.
"Yes it is, though i have my suspicions about it. I think he likes one of the nurses here. Emma I think is her name. She usually attends him, with which ever doctor that happens to be around." He said laughing a little. "Yes you would, but they never do. Its a shame really." he said as he sighed at the thought. Human were complex people, they could always talk themselves into or out of something in the same minute. Their minds never seemed to me made up about anything. Their existence was well, not much of a good one. Being so accident prone, and well indecisive. He was glad he was a vampire sometimes. There was so much more to learn, and do. Plus the added bonus of speed, strength and agility. They were all the plus sides, it wasn't really worth looking at the down side, as there was no going back. Vampire was what they were, and how they were going to stay. "Any ideas on where you would like to go?" He asked grinning at the thought of a holiday.
"oh dont get me started." he said laughing, "I think we should make a list of words to avoid, parties, and decorations are at the top" he joked, though at the same time taking the thought seriously. He was always on edge if there were humans in the house. There was a little risk with it, especially with Jasper. He knew that he was having a tough time adjusting to the vegetarian life. But he had done very well so far, well that was besides his little kill Bella moment but then alls well that ended well. In a way. "You are lucky, she can make you feel so bad for now going with her. Then you end up going, and being tortured with the whole trip. Though she seems happy enough" he said as he shuddered again. Shopping with Alice was like mission impossible, avoid at all costs and Carlisle had even taken to hiding a few times. A sad thing to say, but then Carlisle would rather do that then be put through endless hours of shopping for things that were well not needed.
It was good to read, people could learn a lot from it, and well the medical books were always interesting. There was always something that he could learn from them or some type of information that he missed, first and second time around. "Yeah i guess so. I don't think that them getting too close is a good thing. Dangerous for all parties involved." He replied, Edward had a good point, maybe the fact that they were made out to be scary and evil creatures saved them a lot of trouble. "Yes and no, the right one at the time, but it didn't turn out as well as it could have. Humans are complicated" he told hi with a small smile. It wasn't so hard for Carlisle to understand why he had done it, but he was hurt that he even thought he had to do that. However Carlisle was happy that Edward was there, he could never repay Bella and Alice for what they had done. "Dont be sorry. I'm happy that your plan failed. Just dont do anything like that again, or it wont be the Volturi that you have to worry about" A bad joke... yes, but a true side to it as well. Esme and himself would be his main problem. When the were standing in the airport Carlisle was in two minds as to yell at him, or just be happy and thankful that he was back and safe in one piece. Fortunately he received the second welcome. Not that Carlisle could ever hold it against him. He cared about Edward too much for that. "Sorry i shouldn't have said that." He regretted using those words, but they were the only ones that he could think to use. Carlisle smiled and nodded, "Thank you!" he replied. Carlisle thought about the pack. He wondered if there was anything he could do to keep a peace, after all they had been reasonable people before. Why not again. "Lets try not to give it to him. Bella still has time. Lets not rush things after all its a big decision. This life is a responsibility in a way, in another as you know, Its not that great, however in my opinion now, its also one of the best things that has ever happened to me personally. But what ever you two decide, you have my backing. And the families im sure of that." He said with a smile. He hoped that Jacob would back down, but then if the worst happened Carlisle would fight for their decision either way.

The pain of being changed into a vampire was a very sharp memory for Edward, though he doubted anyone would be able to forget it. Edward recalled thinking that there wasn’t anything worse then being infected with the Spanish influenza but then Carlisle changed him. The burning sensation was excoriating yes, especially during the final day when death was coming closer but Edward would never hold that against Carlisle, he did what he had to and there was only one way for it to be done, simple as that. Edward hadn’t bitten anyone for purpose of changing them, but he’d seen Carlisle do it a few times over. “I could never hold it against you.” Edward told Carlisle, he found it difficult to hold anything against Carlisle there was too much he had to thank the older vampire for. Edward liked the fact that Carlisle was one of the few that didn’t get annoyed with him listening in on his thoughts, it made things easier on Edward. “It seems that way, I just had to wait for her.” Edward said, not that the other’s in the family didn’t have to wait, Edward just had to do his waiting while he was surrounded by those that were paired off. It hadn’t really bothered him though.
Edward had no problem with moving around, he enjoyed it more then most of the others, though he hadn’t allowed himself to get attached to any places in which they lived. Though he probably wouldn’t be so eager to leave Forks now, but Edward held good reasons for not wanting too unless Bella could move on with them human or not. He’d already left Forks once briefly, and well he didn’t like it. But on the whole moving never bothered him. Keeping himself disconnected with the humans was a way of making moving easier on himself and well he found out quickly that he didn’t get along well with humans, basically Edward didn’t play well with others outside of the family. Bella had been the only exception to that little rule, he was even cautious around other vampires until he knew them a bit longer. He also hadn’t had to put up with worrying about how a mate would adjust to moving into a new city or town, of course he enjoyed watching Rosalie with Emmett wondering about the new place and hearing Esme thoughts on how she was going to decorate. For the longest while it was just himself and Carlisle and their relationship showed how close they were and Edward really felt a parental bond between them among others.
Edward was bad with any sort of gossip, not because he cared about knowing what was happening but because his mind automatically searched for it. Like now, quickly he scanned through thoughts looking for any that would send him to Emma, not something he’d been able to stop even after all these years. “Maybe that’s his reason for his almost daily accidents, to see the nurse.” Edward said with a smile, though it seemed a rather odd idea, why not just come by for a visit, but that’s humans for you. “Yes it is, they’re so fragile.” Edward said, of course, had Edward not had to worry about carefully handling a human daily the thought of their fragile bodies wouldn’t cross his mind. Clumsiness wasn’t something they could avoid, Edward knew that but he was amazed at the amount of danger that Bella drew it, it was ridicules really though it did keep him on his feel a lot. He was pulled out of his thoughts when Carlisle spoke, “Hmm, maybe someplace in Europe, we haven’t been there in a good many years.” Edward suggested, they’d have to pick carefully since the sun would limit them in areas.
Edward laughed at Carlisle’s reaction, “Yes, a list would keep us all safe, well that covers Alice and Esme, I think weddings should be on there for Rosalie.” Edward said with a smile, it didn’t sound like a bad idea; they could probably avoid those things if people in the house kept from speaking them. Edward was perfectly fine with humans, there wasn’t a problem with him being in close contact, but he preferred to keep away their thoughts annoyed him at times. Edward hated putting Jasper through it thought, even if Alice knew he wasn’t going to hurt anyone. His brow pulled together slightly in a wince hearing Carlisle’s thoughts about the mishap at Bella’s birthday. He still had a bit of difficulty with those memories but he was working on keeping his reactions from being noticed, failing at it but he was trying. “I luckily get an advantage, knowing when she’s coming for me to make plans or just plain out hide. I can also dampen her mood for the trip too.” Edward said grinning, mind reading was such a pleasure at times along with his ability to go from one mood to another quite quickly.
Edward loved to read, which was obvious though books didn’t last long in his hands now that he’d master the talent during the many nights he’s spent as an immortal. He was a sucker for knowledge and retained it like humans do with water. “Yes, so maybe Hollywood is doing us a large favour” Edward was glad that no one really came close to guessing the reality about vampires, it made the families life much easier. Edward gave a small laugh at what Carlisle said, “That’s one way to look at it, luckily I learn from my mistakes.” He said returning Carlisle’s small smile. He’d never be able to leave Bella again, nor would he even attempt it. He was still working out a way in which to forgive himself for causing that much pain to Bella. Edward hadn’t planned to be returning from Volterra but thankfully he did, even if he had been worried about the response he would get from Esme and Carlisle. It wasn’t that he was afraid of what they would say to him when they saw him, it was their thoughts, disappointed in nature in him yet worried and upset that he’d even thought about it, “I’m glad Alice had caught on so quickly and that Aro is as reasonable as he was. I’ll never put you and Esme through that again.” Edward said and it was the truth, he hated being away from his family, twice was enough to last him an eternity. He’d known Carlisle was thinking about chastising him upon his arrival back in Washington that day but he was glad he’d gotten a much warmer welcome, even if Esme had given him a stiff warning.
“Its fine” Edward said knowing his father had meant no harm in the choice of words that he spoke. It was the best way in which to describe the situation even if Edward hated to think about that at any point. He nodded at Carlisle’s thanks, Edward would not break the treaty, and he’d been one of the people that helped found it there would be no point in him breaking it. Edward wasn’t sure how well this pack would be on coming to terms with a truce or agreement but if anyone could create one he figured Carlisle was the man for the job, he had a way with words. “I won’t, to many things would come apart if we fought” Edward said, the treaty would be gone, his family would most likely have to move and Bella wouldn’t be too happy. That did not mean Edward wouldn’t defend himself. “I know, I wished she’d give it more thought. But I’m not sure how well she actually has thought it through, I don’t have that sort of insight.” he said with a sigh, not hearing Bella was such an in convenience at times. “I have no doubt that she’ll join us one day, she sees no downside. I’m just still attempting to push it off a while.” Edward said, both him and Bella were stubborn, but she was beating him in this little battle, at least in his opinion. “Thank you, I’m sure we’ll need all the backing that we can get.” Edwards aid.

Carlisle smiled at Edward words they meant a lot to him to know that. Especially after what he had put Edward through. "Thank you Edward" He said with a smile, the thought of causing another so much pain sent shivers down his spine, but then that was the only way Carlisle knew how to change others. "At least you have found her now, and I am happy for you" He said, as he smiled. It was great to see Edward happy when he was around Bella, she had done wonders for him. The moving was one of the down sides to their existence. With each passing year it became more and more difficult for them to pass for their ages, and well around so many years or possibly more if they were lucky. There were few places to actually get attached to, as with all the moving around, they more often than not changed by the time they came back to the original place.
"Well I hope its nothing else, because I'm sure he will slie through his hand one of these days. Unfortunate but a possibility." He said, shaking his head at that thought. Humans, so very complex in their minds, and it had taken Carlisle a while to understand them. Even now he sometimes struggled with their thought patterns, and ways of life. Something that seemed so simple to him, might have puzzled a human for days or weeks. "They should make bubble wrap, for humans. That way they could at least bounce" Carlisle said, grinning at the thought. "Yes sounds good. Germany, Holland? Im afraid to say that Spain would be too sunny for us." It was a disappointing thing, but then a family of sparkling people. Well he couldn't see it going down too well, and he could see the humans, either scared to death, or just gob smacked that there were sparkling people.
"Oh good one, I forgot about Rose and weddings. Wow thats a whole other ball game. I swear that one day I shall go mad. The walls have changed colour so many time, the same with my clothes. And weddings, ugh" He said, as he laughed. His eyes caught Edwards reaction, as he shook his head. Quickly changing his line of thought. "Sorry Edward. My mistake. Though you know the accident wont happen again, Jasper has a handle on this I think now." He said, with a small smile. Carlisle knew how Jasper struggled with their diet, and all they had to do, was try and not let Bella spill blood in the house. Simple right? "You mind sharing those advantages occasionally, like yell run Carlisle run, if Alice even thinks about shopping and me." He said, laughing again. "Well that is my problem, she has a look, and then you feel bad for not going with her. I know she does it deliberate, but its still those puppy eyes." He said with a sigh. Alice was a law unto her own, when it came to getting her own way.
"Could be. Though Bella seems to be extremely ok with it. She knows what we are, she knows what we are capable of, she has seen movies with Hollywood's version, and yet she is just... fine with it?" He said thinking about that. Any other human he could see running the other way as fast as they could. Which was pretty slow compared to them, but still. "Thats not a bad thing, we have a long time to learn, and make mistakes. However Edward i can say that you have not made many" He told him, it was true there had been the occasional thing but then Carlisle was no saint and had made mistakes as well. They all had, it was just putting them right, and dealing with them that was the toughest part. Carlisle nodded, "Alice did well. And Aro, he can be reasonable." Carlisle had never seen Aro act as he had done, he was too understanding and with what happened, Carlisle was more than surprised that Edward was allowed to walk out of there, along with Bella and Alice.
That thought was a worrying one, as there had to be something more, as he tried not to let his mind dwell in it too much. He was more than happy to see Edward, Alice and Bella all safe. "Thank you Edward, that means a lot. I dont know what I would do, if I lost you." He said seriously. The fact that Edward had been Carlisle companion for a long time, meant more than he knew, and the strong bonds that Carlisle felt, well he would do anything with in his power to not let them break, or let Edward run off again. Carlisle nodded back, the truce was only as strong if the pack were willing to keep up their side. The fact that Bella now came into the situation, well it didnt make things easier but it was worth it, if they were both happy. After all what was a new town, or county for the sake of the family. "Words are a better way to sort out differences. I believe that the pack are reasonable people. They share a lot with us, though were are on opposite sides, their existance is also secret, and well you know what we go though, on some level both sides are the same." He said, with a small smile.
"Maybe we should discus it as a family? That way she can have everyones stories, and views about the change. It might help her to understand more about what would happen and how things change." He suggested, thinking about the enormity of the decision. None of the family had chosen the life. Carlisle had chosen it for them, well most of them and Carlisle still wondered if he had been selfish in not allowing them the choice. "Good, good. I think the longer she waits, the better she may understand. Just dont let things get too far, I mean try not to push her away, she need to understand more about the life, before she can make an informed choice." Carlisle was sure that Bella would insist on being changed, but when was the question. "You have it Edward. I'll stand by your choice." He told him, "How is Charlie taking things?" He asked, as well Charlie had stayed away from Carlisle, almost like the plague. Carlisle figured that he would come round soon enough, and just to give him his own space.
