PLOT IN A NUTSHELL
AU New Moon. Cullens leave. Bella doesn't cliff dive. Maria slowly recruits vampires and makes newborns to take over the Northwest. They quietly gain a lot of territory. Shit hits the fan when some members want more power. A part of the coven breaks off (The Bosse) and the two begin warring. Meanwhile the werewolves have their hands full with all of these vampires cropping up. Volturi finally notice. Aro isn't happy. They march their italian asses to America. Caius hates wolves, puts them on the hitlist too. The Cullens hear of this and come back. They drag the Denali with them too.

The Cullens had moved on, leaving a brokenhearted Bella behind at the edge of a forest and a pack of werewolves in the lurch to pick up the pieces... but the trivial and sordid details of a relationship gone awry between two beings, or even two families is nothing compared to the problems the rest of the world faces. Forget cliff jumping because if you think almost drowning is your biggest chance for death you're in for a rude awakening. "To really understand why, you have to look at the world from a different perspective. You have to imagine the way it looks to the powerful, the greedy...the perpetually thirsty."
When it comes to the world of the supernatural, warring vampires covens have fought over territory - or farm land, as they call it - for centuries in the South, at times leaving behind such a scar on the cities they feuded over that the humans believed themselves to be caught in an epidemic. The North was supposed to be more nomadic. Civilized. Safer. And that was exactly why it was the best place for a coven of vampires to quietly try and take over as much territory as they wanted.
Though the Volturi have broken up the first, and largest war, and every other war which had the potential to threaten the secret they've been guarding for centuries that didn't mean that there weren't still those who longed for power and domination. After decades of participating in small but futile skirmishes for cities Maria longed to once again hold the power she had during the 1800s and so she sought out a group of like-minded vampires, many of whom had also had some margin of success during the height of the Southern Wars, to help her do just that and more. The coven wasn't formed overnight, though it constantly grew with the addition of newborns and recruits as they quietly made their way through Washington, quietly and slowly (as not to alert the Volturi) laying claim to dozens of cities, both large and small in the first several months of their campaign...but as they neared Seattle problems, as they inevitably do, emerged. Unlike their vegetarian contemporaries the bonds forged between normal vampires are easily broken and as the coven grew in size and power so did their differences until a faction broke off entirely. The Bosse. They wanted the power for themselves, to be second to no one. They wanted the metaphorical throne when all was said and done and so they began to fight against those whom they once worked with.
Vicious battles took place in a bid for the large city of Seattle and though it is considered the main prize, any other town within a few hours drive including Forks and Port Angeles also became viable territory to feud over. All but La Push due to the presence of the vampire's natural enemy, whom have found their werewolf population spiking as they try to protect the humans who've been caught in this war that is all but invisible to them. Of course what is invisible to a human is not so to an immortal and all of this raucous have not escaped the notice of the current rulers of the vampire world: the Volturi. Though they rarely leave their city in Italy with so many covens involved and even werewolves the vampire royal have finally realized they might actually have to protect their positions and the secret of the vampire race by bringing the full guard, wives and all, to deal with all of the warring covens. But if the wolves, who are running themselves ragged keeping up with all these covens and their newborn armies, think they're getting inadvertent assistance from the Volturi they better think again. Caius who had fought and almost lost to a werewolf once in Europe has never been able to let go of his grudge against the entire species and so has declared the wolves to also be a target for the Guard.
Unsurprisingly, if the news of the war reached Italy, it has also reached the Cullens. Horrified at what is happening in and around the town they view as their true home, and spurred on by concern for their loved one's safety, they're high tailing it back to the small rainy town, despite any promise to do otherwise. And it may be a good thing too because with all the problems the wolves face a certain flame haired vampire might just get through their defenses any day now.
